Cautions to Observe when Performing Inspections CAUTION The battery voltage must be the standard voltage. Make sure no harness connector or component connector is loose. Before disconnecting any connector, place the starter switch in the LOCK position and wait 20 seconds. After making a repair, delete the diagnosis code using the Multi-Use Tester or memory clear switch. As a general rule, inspection work should be performed with the starter switch in the LOCK position. However, it may be necessary to perform certain tasks with the starter switch in the ON position. At these times, be careful not to cause short circuits between connector terminals and between terminals and the vehicle body. Indicated component resistances may not fall within the standard ranges if they are unduly affected by the temperature and/or by the accuracy of the tester. Standard values in the text are given on the assump- tion of room temperature (10 to 35°C). After rectification of an abnormality, the system's ability or inability to automatically return to normal con- trol from the control during fault that begins when a fault occurs depends upon the diagnosis code, i.e., the fault location. When the system resumes normal control, the warning lamp goes off. Even when an abnormality has been rectified and the system has automatically returned to normal con- trol, the diagnosis code corresponding to the fault location remains in the memory of the electronic con- trol unit as a past diagnosis code. Following a fault that does not permit an automatic return to normal control from the control during fault that begins when a fault occurs, it is necessary to clear the diagnosis code from memory in order for the system to recover. DIAGNOSIS CODES ---===SME_1007_00068_0006.djvu===--- 54 54-0-3 2. Readout of Diagnosis Codes 2.1 Diagnosis codes Only the current diagnosis codes are displayed. (1) Current diagnosis code It is the diagnosis code that electronic control unit memorizes because of a failure that occurred after turning ON the starter switch (during the power of electronic control unit is ON), and it is the state before the code will change to a past diagnosis code. 2.2 Readout of diagnosis code The readout of diagnosis code is made by reading the blinking of SLD warning lamp. The diagnosis code contin- ues to be displayed until a section of failure returns to normal. SLD: Speed limitation devices When the starter switch is turned ON from OFF position, SLD warning lamp will start displaying the diagnosis code of fault by blinking, that is, turning ON for 0.5 sec and OFF for 1 sec alter- nately. The readout of diagnosis code is made by reading the frequency and the time of blinking of the warning lamp. The blinking time differs between the tens place and the ones place of the diagnosis code. The tens place: every 0.5 sec The ones place: every 0.2 sec The diagnosis code will be displayed in sequence. First, the tens place and then the ones place. One diagnosis code is displayed once. When two or more diag- nosis codes are displayed, there will be an interval of blinking for 1.3 sec between the diagnosis codes. Diagnosis codes will be repeatedly displayed in the ascending order of the code number. ---===SME_1007_00068_0007.djvu===--- 54-0-4 3. Speed Limitation Devices (SLD) 3.1 Outline Speed Limitation Devices (SLD) is controlled by SLD ECU and its function is to control the vehicle speed not to ex- ceed 90 km/h regardless of operation of the accelerator. SLD ECU has functions such as the diagnosis function that makes self-diagnosis of its main components and warns the driver if there is a failure. 3.2 Electronically controlled system (1) System block diagram 3.3 Failure diagnosis function SLD ECU diagnoses at all times whether the accelerator pedal position sensor, the inside of ECU, etc. Failed or not, and if it is judged that there is a failure, it will be notified to the driver by displaying the information of fault on the meter cluster as well as memorizing the failed section as a diagnosis code, and starts control during the fail- ure. In the control during the failure, the functions of the system will be limited to secure the safety of the vehicle and the driver. The diagnosis code can be read out from the blinking of the warning lamp.
